New Holland ENG 3530 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): NOx Sensor Failure - Short Circuit
Issue description
This fault code indicates an electrical short circuit in the Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensor circuit. A short circuit means the sensor's signal or power wiring is shorted to ground or voltage, preventing the engine computer from reading emissions levels. If left unaddressed, this failure will trigger an emissions compliance timer, eventually forcing the engine into a severe power derate (inducement mode).

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading from the engine ECU to the NOx sensor control module for chafed insulation, melted wires from exhaust heat, or pinched harnesses.
Disconnect the NOx sensor and inspect the pins for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent terminals.
Verify that the sensor module is receiving proper operating voltage and a solid ground from the ECU.
Look for related CAN bus communication companion codes (e.g., ENG 3532 or ENG 3533) which might indicate a broader network issue rather than an isolated sensor failure.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during component replacement.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the faulty NOx sensor on the exhaust pipe (typically mounted downstream of the SCR catalyst). Note that the sensor consists of a probe in the exhaust pipe wired directly to a small control module mounted nearby.
Remove the Sensor
Disconnect the electrical connector from the NOx sensor module. Use a specialized NOx/O2 sensor socket to unscrew the probe from the exhaust pipe. (Penetrating oil may be required if the threads are seized from exhaust heat).
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new NOx sensor probe into the exhaust pipe and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification. Mount the attached control module to its bracket.
Reconnect
Plug the machine's electrical harness back into the NOx sensor module and reconnect the battery.
Clear Codes and Reset Inducement
Connect a compatible diagnostic tool (e.g., CNH EASy, Jaltest, or TEXA). Clear the inactive ENG 3530 fault code.
Derate Recovery
If the machine was in a derated state, you must reset the inducement counter. Run the engine so the ECU can verify the SCR system is functioning normally. If the repair is confirmed, the engine will return to full power.
