New Holland ENG 3541 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / EDC): CAN Message timeout SCR1 (from DCU) - CAN timeout
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost Controller Area Network (CAN) communication with the Dosing Control Unit (DCU). When the ECU does not receive the expected SCR1 status messages from the DCU within a specific timeframe, it logs a timeout fault.

Check the cause
CRITICAL: Do not disconnect the battery for at least 4 minutes after shutting off the engine. The SCR system must complete its automatic purge cycle to clear DEF from the lines to prevent freezing and damage.
Check DCU Power and Ground: Verify the fuses, relays, and the main power/ground circuits feeding the Dosing Control Unit, as a CAN timeout is frequently caused by a DCU that has lost power and shut down.
Inspect CAN Bus Wiring: Trace the CAN wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the DCU. Look for chafed wires, breaks, or pinch points.
Inspect Connectors: Disconnect the DCU harness and inspect the pins for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or water ingress.
Check for Accompanying Codes: Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (E.A.S.Y.) to check for internal DCU codes (such as P0563 for battery voltage issues or P062F for internal EEPROM failure) which would confirm a dead module.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and wait the mandatory 4+ minutes for the DEF purge cycle to complete. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
Wiring Repair (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed broken CAN wires or corroded power/ground wires, repair the harness using OEM-approved waterproof splices. Clean any corroded connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.
Module Replacement (If Applicable)
If wiring, power, and ground are all intact, the DCU has likely failed internally. Locate the DEF Dosing Module / DCU assembly (typically mounted near the DEF tank or on the chassis). Disconnect the electrical harness and the DEF fluid lines. Unbolt the module from its mounting bracket and install the new unit. Reconnect the fluid lines and electrical harness.
Reprogramming
A new DCU/Dosing Module will likely need to be programmed or paired to the vehicle's CAN network using the CNH E.A.S.Y. diagnostic software.
Clear and Test
Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes, and run the engine to verify that CAN communication is restored and the ENG 3541 code does not return.
