ENG 3546

New Holland ENG 3546 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: SCR Dosing Valve Overheat Protection - Torque Limitation Level 1 for SCR Protection active.

Issue description

The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) dosing valve (DEF injector or DEF doser) is overheating, triggering a Level 1 torque limitation (engine derate) to protect the SCR system. The DEF fluid acts as a coolant for the injector; if fluid flow is restricted, the valve will rapidly overheat.

Check the cause

  1. Check the DEF filter for blockages, as a clogged filter restricts fluid delivery and cooling to the dosing valve

  2. Inspect DEF lines between the DEF pump and the injector for crystallization or blockages

  3. Verify DEF supply pump operation and ensure it is delivering adequate pressure to the injector

  4. Evaluate work cycles, as short cycles without reaching full operating temperature can cause incomplete DEF purging and clogging

Repair steps

  1. Prep the machine

    Turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental fluid priming or electrical shorts.

  2. Access the exhaust/SCR system

    Locate the SCR dosing valve mounted on the exhaust pipe/SCR catalyst assembly.

  3. Remove heat shields

    Remove the bolts securing the exhaust shield bracket and set the bracket aside. Open the thermal insulation blanket surrounding the exhaust pipe.

  4. Disconnect the valve

    Carefully disconnect the electrical harness connector and the DEF supply line from the dosing valve. Have a rag ready, as residual DEF may leak out.

  5. Remove the dosing valve

    Remove the support clamp bolts and the V-band/pipe clamp securing the dosing valve to the exhaust pipe. Pull the valve free.

  6. Clean the port

    Thoroughly clean the mounting boss on the exhaust pipe to ensure a proper seal for the new injector.

  7. Install the new valve

    Seat the new SCR dosing valve, secure it with the clamp, and torque the bolts to OEM spec.

  8. Reassemble components

    Reconnect the DEF fluid line and electrical connector. Secure the insulation blanket and reinstall the exhaust shield bracket.

  9. Replace the DEF filter

    Always install a new DEF filter when replacing a failed dosing valve to ensure unrestricted fluid flow.

  10. Clear codes

    Reconnect the battery and use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the ENG 3546 fault code and reset the torque derate.
