New Holland ENG 3581 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ENG): Performance limit active due to either stage - Performance Limitation active

This is an information-only fault indicating that the machine's engine is currently in a performance limitation (derate) state. The ECM logs this as a secondary fault code whenever another primary fault code forces the engine to derate.

   Use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EASY) or the machine's in-cab display to pull all 'present' (active) fault codes.

   Look for the primary code that triggered the derate. This is almost always related to the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) system (e.g., NOx sensor plausibility errors, DEF dosing valve issues, or poor DEF quality).

   Diagnose the primary fault by following the diagnostic steps in the service manual for the specific primary code you retrieved.

   Repair the primary issue

   Perform the necessary physical repairs or component replacements dictated by the primary fault code (e.g., replacing a failed NOx sensor, draining contaminated DEF, or replacing a DEF dosing module).

   Clear the derate

   Once the primary fault has been physically repaired, return the machine to a low idle.

   Verify system healing

   According to the CNH service manual, once the primary fault is resolved and the machine is at low idle, the 'engine fault' message should clear automatically.

   Restart engine

   Turn the engine off and perform an engine restart. Upon restart or achievement of the low idle position, the machine will exit the derate state and return to normal operation.
