New Holland ENG 3616 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): Turbocharger: Torque limitation caused by turbo charger protection

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has intentionally limited the engine's torque output (a protective de-rate) to prevent catastrophic damage to the turbocharger. This is typically triggered by an overboost condition, extreme exhaust temperatures, or operation at very high altitudes where the turbocharger could overspeed trying to compress thin air.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes, specifically ENG 3648 (Turbocharger: P2 pressure errors in PCR), which indicates active overboosting.

  2. Verify operating conditions — if operating at a very high altitude, this code may trigger as a normal protective measure.

  3. Inspect the turbocharger wastegate actuator and linkage for sticking or seizing.

  4. Test live data for the Boost Pressure Sensor and Exhaust Manifold Pressure Sensor for implausible readings (e.g., reading high pressure when the engine is off).

  5. Inspect intake and exhaust systems for severe restrictions in the air filter, intake piping, or exhaust system (including DPF/DOC).

Repair steps

  1. Address Altitude (If Applicable)

    If the machine is operating at high altitude, explain to the operator that the torque limitation is a built-in safety feature.

  2. Free or Replace the Wastegate

    If the wastegate linkage is physically stuck, apply penetrating oil and attempt to free it manually. If the internal wastegate flap is seized or the actuator has failed, the turbocharger assembly will likely need to be replaced.

  3. Replace Faulty Sensors

    If diagnostic testing proves the Boost Pressure Sensor or Exhaust Pressure Sensor is reading out of range (causing the ECM to falsely believe the turbo is overboosting), disconnect the battery, replace the faulty sensor, and torque to specification (e.g., 14 N·m / 10 lb ft for the exhaust pressure sensor).

  4. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3616 code and any related historical codes from the ECM.

  5. Test Run

    Operate the machine under load to verify that full torque is restored and the code does not return.
