ENG 3648

New Holland ENG 3648 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC7 or EDC7UC31: Turbocharger: P2 pressure errors in PCR - Pressure deviation too high

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the actual turbocharger boost pressure (P2 pressure) measured in the intake manifold is significantly higher than the target pressure requested by the engine control logic.

Check the cause

  1. Monitor live data using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to compare actual vs. desired boost pressure while the engine is running.

  2. Inspect the P2 boost pressure sensor and its wiring harness for shorts to battery (Vbatt), shorts to ground, or erratic signals.

  3. Check the turbocharger actuator (EVGT linkage or wastegate actuator) for mechanical binding, which is a primary cause of overboost.

  4. On F5H Tier 4A engines, inspect the boost pressure modulator valve that controls the wastegate actuator.

  5. Check for exhaust restrictions in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) or exhaust system that can cause abnormal pressure dynamics.

Repair steps

  1. Cool down machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the turbocharger and exhaust components to cool completely.

  2. Inspect P2 boost pressure sensor

    Locate the P2 boost pressure sensor (MAP sensor) on the intake manifold. Disconnect the electrical pigtail and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage.

  3. Test and replace sensor if faulty

    Test the sensor's voltage supply and signal return using a multimeter. If the sensor is internally shorted or reading a high pressure value when the engine is off, replace the boost pressure sensor.

  4. Check turbocharger linkage

    If the sensor is functioning correctly, locate the turbocharger wastegate or VGT actuator linkage. Attempt to move the linkage by hand. It should move smoothly without binding.

  5. Free or replace turbocharger assembly

    If the linkage is stuck, apply penetrating oil to the external pivot points. If the internal vanes or wastegate flap are seized due to heavy carbon buildup, the turbocharger assembly must be removed and either professionally cleaned or replaced.

  6. Test Boost Pressure Modulator Valve

    Test the Boost Pressure Modulator Valve. If it is failing to vent pressure to the wastegate actuator (keeping the wastegate closed under heavy load), replace the valve.

  7. Reassemble components

    Reassemble all components and ensure all intake clamps are tight.

  8. Clear codes and test run

    Connect the diagnostic tool, clear the ENG 3648 fault code, and perform a loaded test run to verify that the turbocharger pressure deviation remains within normal parameters.
