New Holland ENG 3652 – ENGINE (EDC - Electronic Diesel Control): CAN Bus Communication: CAN Bus off of CAN node A
Issue description
The Controller Area Network (CAN) bus has experienced a critical communication failure at "Node A" (typically the engine controller network interface). The module has gone into a "Bus Off" state, meaning it has detected too many transmission errors and has disconnected itself from the network to prevent further disruption to other modules.
Applies to these machines
12 machines- F5C engines
- F5H engines
- ISM-IDI engines
- L220
- 200 Series
- SR175
- SR130
- SR160
- B90B
- B100B
- B110
- B115
Check the cause
Check battery voltage and ensure the unswitched 12-volt supply to the Engine ECU is stable
Inspect the main engine wiring harness and CAN bus lines for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation
Disconnect the Engine ECU and inspect pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals (pay special attention to the 2-pin Engine CAN bus connectors)
Measure termination resistance between CAN High and CAN Low with the battery disconnected (a healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms)
Repair steps
Safety First
Attach a "Do Not Operate" warning tag to the machine. Disconnect the negative battery cable before servicing the electrical system.
Isolate the Fault
If the termination resistance is 120 ohms, one resistor is missing or there is a break in the wiring. If it is 0 ohms, there is a short circuit between CAN High and CAN Low.
Repair/Replace Wiring
If a short or break is found in the CAN bus wiring, splice in a CAN bus wiring repair section using heat-shrink tubing and dielectric grease, or replace the affected harness section entirely.
Replace Connectors/Resistors
If the 2-pin CAN connector is heavily corroded or the termination resistor has failed, cut out the damaged connector and wire in a new OEM replacement.
Reconnect and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Use a dealer diagnostic tool or a compatible CAN-Bus DTC Eraser to clear the ENG 3652 code from the Engine ECU memory, as CAN bus errors often require a hard reset to restore communication.
Verify Operation
Turn the key to the ON position and verify that the dashboard and Engine ECU are communicating without throwing the code again.
