New Holland ENG 3656 – Engine ECU: Torque Limited Due to DPF Load
Issue description
This code indicates that the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has become severely clogged with soot or ash, causing high exhaust backpressure. To protect the engine from excessive heat and backpressure damage, the engine control system has actively intervened to limit engine torque (derating the engine).

Check the cause
Check the DPF differential pressure sensor and its connecting hoses. Look for melted, cracked, or clogged hoses, which can cause false pressure readings.
Use a diagnostic tool to read the current soot and ash accumulation levels in the DPF. If the computer senses the DPF is around 80% clogged or higher, it may lock out standard regeneration.
Check for accompanying secondary codes that might indicate the root cause of the excessive soot, such as EGR faults (e.g., 3663), fuel pressure issues, or timeout errors (e.g., 3657).
Repair steps
Attempt a manual/parked regeneration
Move the machine to a safe, well-ventilated outdoor area completely away from combustible materials. Initiate a manual (forced) regeneration using the in-cab DPF switch or a connected dealer diagnostic tool. Allow the machine to complete the cycle uninterrupted to burn off accumulated soot.
Professional cleaning or replacement
If the soot load is too high for an active regeneration, or if the filter is packed with incombustible ash, the DPF must be physically removed. Send the DPF to a certified cleaning facility to be baked and blown out, or replace it entirely with a new or remanufactured unit.
Clear the ECU
Once the DPF is cleaned or replaced, use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the fault codes from the Engine ECU and reset the DPF ash/soot counters so the computer knows a clean filter has been installed.
