New Holland ENG 3659 – ENGINE (EDC): EDC - Battery voltage: Power stage diagnosis could be disabled due to high Battery voltage

Issue description

The engine controller is detecting that the system voltage supplied to it has exceeded the maximum safe operating threshold (typically >15.5V to 16V on a 12V system). To protect its internal circuitry (the "power stage" that drives actuators and injectors), the ECU disables certain diagnostic functions and may limit engine performance.

Check the cause

  1. Battery Test: With the engine off, use a multimeter to check the resting battery voltage at the terminals (should be around 12.4V – 12.8V).

  2. Alternator Output Test: Start the engine and measure the voltage across the battery terminals. If the voltage climbs above 14.5V – 15V (or exceeds 16V), the alternator's internal voltage regulator has failed and is overcharging the system.

  3. Ground and Cable Inspection: Inspect the main chassis grounds, cab pivot grounds, and the direct ground strap to the EDC. A loose or heavily corroded ground can cause the alternator to spike voltage or the ECU to misread the supply voltage.

  4. Harness Pin Test: Disconnect the EDC harness and measure the voltage directly at the power supply pins on the connector to verify if the harness is shorting to another power source.

Repair steps

  1. Clean Connections

    Disconnect the battery. Clean the battery terminals, battery tray, and all primary ground connections on the engine block and chassis with a wire brush. Reconnect and ensure they are tight.

  2. Replace the Alternator (If Overcharging)

    If step 2 of your diagnostics confirmed the alternator is putting out excessive voltage, remove the drive belt, disconnect the alternator wiring, and unbolt the alternator. Install a new OEM alternator and tension the belt to spec.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the alternator tests fine but voltage at the ECU plug is abnormally high, trace the wiring harness back to the battery/fuse box to locate and repair any shorts to power.

  4. Clear Codes

    Reconnect all components, turn the key to the ON position, and use a CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or compatible diagnostic scanner to clear the inactive 3659 fault code from the EDC memory.

  5. Verify Repair

    Start the machine and monitor the live battery voltage data stream on the scanner or dashboard. Ensure it remains stable between 13.5V and 14.5V under load.

    The most common culprit for high-voltage codes. Ensure the replacement matches the amperage rating of the original.

  • Battery (12V Heavy Duty Agricultural Battery)

    If the alternator has been overcharging for an extended period, the battery may be "boiled" or warped and will require replacement.

  • Engine Control Unit (EDC)

    Only replace if the charging system is perfectly stable at 14V, but the ECU still internally registers a high-voltage fault due to a damaged internal power stage.
