ENG 3663

New Holland ENG 3663 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): EGR Command Saturation Over Higher Threshold

Issue description

This code indicates that the positive limit of the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve governor deviation has been exceeded. Technically, this means the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is commanding the EGR valve to move to a specific position, but the desired position cannot be reached. This is most commonly caused by the EGR valve sticking or binding inside its assembly due to carbon buildup, or a mismatch/failure in the EGR valve position sensor.

Applies to these machines

  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090 Elevation Tier 4A
  • L-Series
  • L213
  • L216
  • L218
  • L220
  • C-Series
  • T4 Series
  • T5 Series

Check the cause

  1. Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to confirm that fault code 3663 is currently ACTIVE.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness running from the ECU to the EGR valve for signs of abrasion, melting, or physical damage. Wiggle the harness while the machine is running to check for intermittent electrical connections.

  3. Disconnect and inspect the ECU and EGR valve connectors. Ensure all pins are secure, tight, and completely free of corrosion or moisture.

  4. Remove the EGR valve and manually check if the valve is binding or sticking inside the assembly due to heavy soot or carbon buildup.

  5. Check the EGR valve position sensor to ensure it is reading correctly and not sending a mismatched signal to the ECU.

Repair steps

  1. Clean the System

If the EGR valve is sticking due to carbon buildup, thoroughly clean the EGR passages and the intake manifold to remove deposits.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or corroded connector pins, repair or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace the EGR Valve

If the valve is mechanically bound and cannot be freed, or if the internal position sensor has failed, the EGR valve assembly must be replaced.

  4. Reassembly

Install the new EGR valve (this is typically a direct bolt-in replacement). Ensure proper sealing to prevent vacuum or exhaust leaks.

  5. Clear and Test

Reconnect the EST, clear the inactive fault codes, and operate the machine under load to verify that code 3663 does not return.
