New Holland ENG 3688 – Engine ECU: Water in Fuel (WIF) Sensor Check is Failed

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the Water in Fuel (WIF) sensor to determine when the fuel filter's water collection bowl is full and needs to be drained. Fault code ENG 3688 indicates that the diagnostic check for this sensor has failed, meaning the ECU is unable to receive a valid signal from the sensor. This is typically caused by a faulty sensor or a compromised wiring harness, rather than actual water in the fuel.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Active Fault: Check if the fault code is currently active or stored in the history. If it is inactive, clear the code and see if it returns.

  2. Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the WIF sensor (e.g., Connector X-9125 on Workmaster models). Look for chafed wires, broken connections, or corrosion in the plug.

  3. Drain the Filter: Drain the fuel filter water separator to ensure the bowl is not completely full of water, which could potentially skew readings or cause related pressure/water codes.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine, remove the key, and allow the engine to cool.

  2. Locate the primary fuel filter / water separator assembly (typically mounted on the side of the engine block).

  3. Place a catch pan underneath the fuel filter to catch any diesel fuel or water that will drain out.

  4. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the Water in Fuel (WIF) sensor located at the very bottom of the fuel filter.

  5. Unscrew the faulty WIF sensor from the bottom of the filter canister.

  6. Lubricate the o-ring on the new WIF sensor with a small amount of clean diesel fuel.

  7. Thread the new sensor into the bottom of the fuel filter and tighten it securely (do not overtighten, as the plastic threads can strip or crack the housing).

  8. Reconnect the electrical wiring harness to the new sensor.

  9. Turn the ignition key to the "ON" position (without starting the engine) to allow the fuel system to prime and the ECU to run its diagnostic check. Verify that the glow plug sequence completes and the 3688 error code no longer appears on the dash.
