ENG 3695

New Holland ENG 3695 – Engine ECU: Glow Plugs: Array of DFCs for Failure in Cylinder 1 Glow Plug

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an electrical fault, open circuit, or failure specifically on the glow plug heating element or circuit for engine cylinder number 1.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Cylinder 1 glow plug for chafing, melting, or disconnected terminals.

  2. Resistance/Continuity Test: Disconnect the wire to the Cylinder 1 glow plug and measure the resistance of the plug to a good engine ground using a multimeter. An open circuit (infinite resistance) or unusually high resistance confirms a burned-out glow plug.

  3. Voltage Test: Turn the key to the ON position (cold engine) and verify that the glow plug relay/module is sending 12V to the Cylinder 1 glow plug wire during the pre-heat cycle. If voltage is missing, the issue may lie in the wiring harness or the glow plug relay.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental short circuits while working on the engine electrical system.

  2. Locate Cylinder 1

Identify Cylinder 1 on the engine block (typically the cylinder closest to the front of the engine/cooling fan).

  3. Remove Electrical Connection

Carefully remove the retaining nut or pull the electrical connector off the top of the Cylinder 1 glow plug.

  4. Extract the Glow Plug

Using a deep socket, carefully unscrew the glow plug from the cylinder head. Note: If the plug is seized, use a specialized glow plug dismantling aid/penetrating solvent to prevent breaking the plug off in the cylinder head.

  5. Install New Glow Plug

Apply a high-temperature anti-seize or specialized glow plug grease to the threads of the new glow plug. Thread it in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reconnect

Reattach the electrical wire and secure the retaining nut. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Use a diagnostic tool/CAN-bus eraser to clear the ENG 3695 fault code from the Engine ECU. Cycle the ignition to verify the cold-start pre-heat sequence operates normally and the code does not return.
