New Holland ENG 3696 – Engine ECU (EDC): Glow Plugs: Array of DFCs for Failure in Cylinder 2 Glow Plug

The engine control system has detected an electrical fault—such as an open circuit, short, or abnormal resistance—specifically in the glow plug or its dedicated circuit for engine cylinder number 2.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector leading to the cylinder 2 glow plug. Look for frayed wires, melted insulation, or loose/corroded connections.

   Resistance Test: Disconnect the wire from the cylinder 2 glow plug and use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance between the glow plug terminal and the engine block (ground). A healthy glow plug should have very low resistance (typically 0.5 to 2.0 ohms). If it reads infinite (open circuit) or unusually high, the glow plug has failed internally.

   Power Supply Check: Test the glow plug connector for voltage when the key is first turned to the 'ON' position (during the wait-to-start cycle). If no voltage is present, the issue may lie upstream in the Fast Glow Plug Control Unit (FGPCU) or the glow plug relay.

   Relay Check: Inspect the glow plug relay in the main fuse box for signs of burning or failure.

   Preparation

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts.

   Access

   Locate the cylinder 2 glow plug on the engine cylinder head. Clear any dirt or debris from around the base of the plug to prevent contamination from falling into the cylinder.

   Disconnection

   Carefully remove the electrical connector or retaining nut securing the wire to the top of the glow plug.

   Removal

   Apply a penetrating fluid to the threads of the glow plug and let it soak (glow plugs are prone to snapping if forced). Using a deep socket, gently loosen and remove the faulty glow plug.

   Installation

   Thread the new glow plug in by hand to ensure it does not cross-thread. Tighten it to the specific torque rating outlined in your machine's engine service manual.

   Reassembly

   Reattach the electrical wire and secure the connector/nut. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

   Clear Codes

   Turn the ignition key to the ON position to let the glow plug cycle run. Use an OBD/CAN diagnostic service tool to clear the ENG 3696 fault code from the EDC. Start the engine to verify the code does not return.
