New Holland ENG 3697 – Engine Controller (EDC / Engine ECU): Glow Plugs: Array of DFCs for Failure in Cylinder 3 Glow Plug

The engine control system has detected a malfunction, lack of continuity, or failure specifically in the glow plug responsible for heating cylinder number 3 during cold starts.

   Inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector leading to the cylinder 3 glow plug for fraying, corrosion, or loose connections

   Use a multimeter to test the cylinder 3 glow plug for proper resistance. A reading of infinite resistance (open circuit) confirms the glow plug has failed internally

   Check for accompanying codes that might indicate a broader electrical issue, such as 3693 (Short circuit to battery), 3694 (Short circuit to ground), or 3689 (Communication error between Glow Plug Unit and Engine Controller)

   Ensure the glow plug control unit is sending the correct voltage (typically 10.5V - 12V depending on the exact engine) to the plug when the key is turned to the 'ON' position

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent accidental short circuits while working on the engine electrical system.

   Locate the Glow Plug

   Locate the glow plug for cylinder 3 on the engine block/cylinder head.

   Remove the Connector

   Carefully unbolt or unclip the electrical wire/harness connected to the top of the cylinder 3 glow plug.

   Extract the Glow Plug

   Using a deep socket, carefully unscrew the faulty glow plug from the cylinder head. Note: Do this gently to avoid snapping the glow plug inside the block.

   Install the New Part

   Thread the new glow plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it to the OEM torque specifications.

   Reconnect

   Reattach the electrical connector to the new glow plug and reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes

   Use a diagnostic service tool or DTC eraser to clear the ENG 3697 code from the Engine ECU.

   Test

   Cycle the ignition to activate the glow plugs, start the engine, and verify that the code does not return. If the fault persists, the glow plug control unit or engine controller may require replacement or reprogramming.
