New Holland ENG 3724 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Lambda Sensor: Short to Battery at IA, IP, UN, VG

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit's internal SPI chip has detected a "short circuit to battery" (high voltage source) defect on one or more of the specific circuits communicating with the Lambda (Oxygen/O2) sensor. This indicates that voltage from the battery is bleeding into the sensor's signal or ground circuits.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness routing from the Lambda sensor to the Engine ECU for melted insulation, chafing against the frame or exhaust, or pinched wires.

  2. Disconnect the Lambda sensor and inspect both sides of the connector for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging a 12V power supply to the UN, VG, IA, or IP pins.

  3. With the sensor unplugged and the key ON (engine OFF), use a digital multimeter to probe the IA, IP, UN, and VG terminals on the harness side. If you read 12V, the wiring harness has a short that must be repaired.

  4. If the harness tests clean (no voltage on the signal lines), the short is likely internal to the Lambda sensor's heating element or cell structure.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable. Ensure the exhaust system has completely cooled down to prevent severe burns.

  2. Removal

    Locate the Lambda sensor on the exhaust pipe (typically upstream near the DOC/DPF assembly). Disconnect the electrical connector.

  3. Unscrew Sensor

    Use a dedicated O2 sensor socket (usually 22mm or 7/8") to carefully break the sensor loose. If it is seized, apply penetrating oil and allow it to soak.

  4. Installation

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (many OEM Bosch sensors come with this pre-applied). Do not get anti-seize on the sensor tip.

  5. Torque

    Thread the new sensor in by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification (usually around 30-40 lb-ft).

  6. Routing

    Reconnect the electrical connector. Ensure the wiring pigtail is secured with zip-ties or clips in its original routing to keep it away from extreme exhaust heat and moving parts.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST or Jaltest) to clear the inactive ENG 3724 fault code. Start the engine and verify the code does not return.
