ENG 3735

Issue description

This code indicates that the internal device driver inside the engine computer, which controls the Fuel Metering Unit (also known as the Fuel Control Actuator or M-Prop), has overheated. This is typically caused by excessive current draw resulting from a short circuit, high system voltage, or an internal failure of the metering unit itself.

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Electronic Service Tool to the diagnostic connector to verify if the fault code is currently active

  2. Verify that the machine is not experiencing high system voltage (e.g., an overcharging alternator), which can cause the driver to overheat

  3. Check engine temperatures to ensure the engine itself is not severely overheating

  4. Thoroughly inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ECU and the Fuel Metering Unit for chafed wires causing a short to ground or a short to power

  5. Check the internal resistance of the Fuel Metering Unit to determine if an internal short in the solenoid is causing excessive current draw

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring

    If any shorts or damaged wires are found during the diagnostic inspection, repair or replace the affected harness section.

  2. Replace Metering Unit

    If the Fuel Metering Unit fails the resistance test or is found to be internally shorted, replace it.

  3. Clear Codes

    Use the Electronic Service Tool to clear the fault codes. Start and operate the machine to see if code 3735 returns.

  4. Address the ECU

    Because the 'device driver' is an internal component of the Engine Controller, if the wiring and metering unit are both good but the code remains active, the ECU itself has suffered permanent hardware damage. You must reprogram or replace the Engine Controller (EDC).

  5. Restore Parameters

    If the EDC is replaced, you must follow the appropriate Service Tool procedure to restore the engine's self-learning parameters.
