ENG 3764

New Holland ENG 3764 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): EDC Power Relay - Main Relay: Early opening defect of main relay

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the main power relay is opening (de-energizing) prematurely. Under normal operation, the main relay is controlled by the ECU and is only supposed to be switched off by the ECU after the engine's 'after-run' (shutdown) sequence has fully completed.

  • Speedrower 200

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the main relay and its socket for corrosion, melted plastic, or loose terminal pins

  2. Verify that the relay is receiving proper voltage on the Terminal 30 circuit and check battery terminals and main chassis grounds for sudden voltage drops

  3. Ohm-test the wiring harness between the main relay socket and the ECU to rule out a broken wire or short-to-ground

  4. Swap the main relay with a known-good relay of the exact same type from a non-critical circuit (e.g., a work light relay) to see if the fault clears

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Relay Panel

Open the main electrical distribution box (location varies by machine; e.g., under the cab on L-series skid steers).

  3. Remove the Faulty Relay

Pull the EDC Main Power Relay from its socket.

  4. Clean the Socket

If there is any dirt, moisture, or light corrosion in the socket, clean it with electrical contact cleaner and allow it to dry.

  5. Install the New Relay

Push the replacement relay firmly into the socket, ensuring all pins seat correctly.

  6. Reassemble and Reconnect

Close the relay panel and reconnect the negative battery cable.

  7. Clear Codes

Connect a diagnostic scan tool (or use the onboard monitor if equipped) to clear the ENG 3764 fault code.

  8. Test Run

Start the machine, let it run for a few minutes, and then shut it down. Wait for the ECU after-run sequence to complete to verify the code does not return.
