New Holland ENG 378 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Front Fueling current is too low

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an abnormally low electrical current (an open circuit or high resistance) in the circuit for the Front Fueling Actuator. This actuator meters fuel to the front bank of engine cylinders (1, 2, and 3). When this circuit fails, the engine will typically derate, run rough, or run using only the rear cylinders.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECM to the Integrated Fuel System Module (IFSM) for chafed wires, heat damage, or breaks.

  2. Disconnect the plug at the Front Fueling Actuator and check the pins on both the harness and the actuator for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the Front Fueling Actuator coil using a multimeter to check for an open circuit or out-of-spec resistance.

  4. Check the continuity of the signal and return wires from the actuator connector back to the ECM pins to rule out a broken wire in the loom.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Actuator

    Locate the Integrated Fuel System Module (IFSM) on the side of the engine block. Identify the Front Fueling Actuator (there are separate actuators for front/rear fueling and front/rear timing).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the electrical pigtail connector from the faulty actuator.

  4. Remove the Actuator

    Remove the mounting screws securing the actuator to the IFSM block. Carefully pull the actuator straight out.

  5. Clean the Port

    Wipe the mounting surface and the bore on the IFSM with a clean, lint-free cloth. Ensure no dirt or debris enters the open fuel system passages.

  6. Prep the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new Front Fueling Actuator with clean engine oil. (Do not install it dry, as this can tear the O-rings and cause internal fuel leaks).

  7. Install

    Insert the new actuator into the IFSM. Install the mounting screws and torque them evenly to the Cummins OEM specification.

  8. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the actuator until it clicks securely. Reconnect the battery.

  9. Clear and Test

    Connect a diagnostic tool (or use the in-cab display) to clear the ENG 378 fault code. Start the engine, check for fuel leaks around the IFSM, and verify that the engine runs smoothly on all cylinders without the code returning.
