New Holland ENG 3786 – Engine ECU: Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): Signal range check flow resistance of the particulate filter - high

Issue description

Level 2 DPF Soot Load Overload. The Engine Control Unit has detected that the exhaust backpressure (flow resistance) across the Diesel Particulate Filter is abnormally high. This usually means the filter is clogged with soot because the machine has not been able to complete automatic passive regenerations (often due to excessive idling or light-load operations).

Check the cause

  1. Review operating conditions to determine if the machine has been doing a lot of idling or low-RPM lugging, which prevents passive soot burn-off.

  2. Inspect the DPF Differential Pressure Sensor and its connecting hoses/tubes for melting, cracking, or blockages that could falsely report high flow resistance.

  3. Check for escalating codes such as 3787 (Flow resistance - very high) or 3789 (Regeneration duration exceeds maximum), which may indicate the filter is too clogged for a standard forced regeneration.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare for Forced Regeneration

    Park the machine outside in a well-ventilated area, strictly away from combustible or highly flammable materials. Warning: The exhaust stack and fixed hood area will become extremely hot during this process.

  2. Command Forced Regeneration

    Using the tractor's cluster interface (dashboard menus) or the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop software, initiate a manual/forced DPF regeneration.

  3. Allow the Cycle to Complete

    Let the engine run through the automated high-idle cycle. Do not interrupt the process unless there is an immediate safety hazard.

  4. Verify Repair

    Once the regeneration finishes, check the soot load parameters on the dashboard or service tool. The fault code should change from Active to Inactive and can be cleared.

  5. Address Persistent Faults

    If the forced regeneration fails, or the code immediately returns, the DPF Differential Pressure Sensor is likely faulty, or the DPF is permanently face-plugged with ash.

  6. Replace and Reset

    If the DPF filter is replaced or professionally cleaned, or if the pressure sensor is replaced, you must use the New Holland Service Tool to reset the DPF self-learning parameters and ash accumulation timers.
