New Holland ENG 3796 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Pressure Sensor: DFC to indicate hose line error

Issue description

The engine controller monitors the exhaust pressure before and after the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to calculate soot accumulation. This code triggers when the system detects an implausible pressure drop across the filter. It typically means the physical hose lines connecting the DPF housing to the differential pressure sensor are disconnected, melted, cracked, blocked (by soot or ice), or plumbed backward. It can also indicate an internal DPF failure causing a sudden lack of exhaust restriction.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual inspection of the DPF differential pressure sensor hoses for detachment, cracking, melting, or chafing.

  2. Disconnect the hoses and check for internal blockages caused by heavy soot buildup, condensation, or ice.

  3. Verify the plumbing to ensure the high-pressure and low-pressure hoses are not swapped.

  4. Perform a sensor baseline test using a diagnostic scan tool with key ON and engine OFF (should read at or near 0.0).

  5. Check DPF integrity for internal failure (cracked or blown out substrate) if hoses and sensor are fine.

Repair steps

  1. Access the DPF System

    Ensure the machine is turned off and the exhaust system has completely cooled, as DPF components reach extremely high temperatures (over 700°C / 1292°F during regeneration).

  2. Repair/Replace Hoses

    If a hose is damaged or blocked, remove the clamps and replace the hose line. If the metal bung/pressure line on the DPF housing itself is damaged, it may need to be drilled out and a repair kit (such as an HJS weld-in thread/pressure line kit) installed. Note: Ensure no metal shavings or debris fall into the DPF housing during this process.

  3. Replace the Sensor

    If the hoses are intact but the sensor failed the baseline test, unbolt the differential pressure sensor, disconnect the electrical harness, and install a new sensor.

  4. Clear the Code

    Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the ENG 3796 code from the Engine ECU.

  5. Force a Regeneration

    Perform a stationary (parked) DPF regeneration via the tractor's display menu or diagnostic tool. This will allow the ECU to relearn the pressure differential and verify that the repair was successful and the code does not return.
