ENG 382

New Holland ENG 382 – Engine Controller (ENG / Engine ECU): Error detected in cold start relay 2

Issue description

The Engine Control Module has detected an electrical malfunction in the circuit for the secondary cold start relay, such as an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to power in the relay's control or load side.

Applies to these machines

  • T9 Series
  • T9000 Series
  • Boomer/TC compact series
  • CR7.90
  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090
  • Magnum
  • Steiger

Check the cause

  1. Perform a battery load test to ensure voltage doesn't drop significantly under load, which can cause the relay to fail to engage.

  2. Visually inspect Cold Start Relay 2 and its socket in the engine compartment fuse/relay box for melted plastic, burnt pins, or heavy corrosion.

  3. Bench test the relay with a multimeter to check resistance across coil pins and continuity across switch pins when 12V is applied.

  4. Check the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the relay block for chafing, broken wires, or a short to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental shorts.

  2. Access the Relay

Open the engine compartment fuse/relay box and locate Cold Start Relay 2 (refer to the specific machine's fuse diagram on the inside of the lid).

  3. Clean the Circuit

If the relay socket shows signs of dirt or light corrosion, spray it with electrical contact cleaner and let it dry.

  4. Replace the Relay

If the relay failed the bench test or is visibly damaged, plug a new OEM relay into the socket. Ensure it is seated firmly.

  5. Restore Power

    Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  6. Test the System

Turn the key to the ON position (do not crank immediately). Wait for the cold start/wait-to-start light to cycle. Listen for the audible "click" of the relay engaging.

  7. Clear Codes

Connect a diagnostic scanner (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive ENG 382 code from the Engine ECU memory.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Cold Start Relay / Main Power Relay

    84543666

Verify the exact part number against your machine's specific serial number and engine tier in the CNH parts catalog, as relay amperages can vary by engine size.
