New Holland ENG 3820 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / EDC: EDC: Over temperature error for H-bridge.

This fault indicates that the H-bridge circuit—an internal electronic driver used to control the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) motor in both directions—is overheating. An over-temperature condition in the H-bridge is typically caused by excessive current draw. This can be the result of a mechanically binding throttle valve, an internal short in the actuator motor, or a short circuit in the wiring harness connecting the actuator to the controller.

   Use an Electronic Service Tool to clear the fault codes and operate the machine to see if code 3820 returns actively

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU (EDC) and the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA), specifically checking the 60-pin engine connector at pins A49 and A34 for chafed wires causing a short to ground or battery

   Remove the intake tubing and inspect the Throttle Valve Actuator for heavy carbon buildup or physical binding that would cause the motor to draw excess current

   Test the resistance of the TVA motor to ensure it is not internally shorted

   Clear and Retest

   Clear the code using a diagnostic tool. If the code does not return, the machine can be returned to service. If it returns, proceed to step 2.

   Harness Repair

   If the wiring inspection reveals damage, corrosion, or shorts on the circuits leading to pins A49 or A34 on the ECU, repair or replace the damaged section of the engine wiring harness.

   Clean the TVA

   If the throttle valve is sticking due to soot or carbon, perform a thorough cleaning of the Throttle Valve Actuator assembly. Reinstall and retest.

   Replace the TVA

   If the valve is mechanically seized, or if the internal motor is shorted, replace the Throttle Valve Actuator.

   Replace the ECU (EDC)

   If the wiring harness is intact and the TVA is functioning correctly, the H-bridge driver inside the Engine Control Unit has likely failed permanently due to the over-temperature event. The ECU will need to be replaced and programmed by a dealer.
