ENG 3823

New Holland ENG 3823 – ENGINE: Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) Circuit - Short Circuit To Ground

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a short circuit to the minus battery or chassis ground on the Out1 circuit for the H-bridge. This indicates that the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) drive circuit or its wiring is shorted to ground.

Applies to these machines

  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • L220
  • SR175
  • B90B
  • B100B
  • AWS models

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the throttle valve actuator connector (X-016) to ensure all connections are secure, tight, and completely free of corrosion, abrasion, or physical damage.

  2. Inspect the wire harness for damage, specifically looking for a wire that has rubbed bare and is shorting to the chassis ground or the minus battery terminal on the TVA valve drive circuit.

  3. Inspect the Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA) itself for a sticking or mechanically jammed valve.

Repair steps

  1. Harness/Connector Repair

If the diagnostic checks reveal damage to the connectors or the wiring harness, repair or replace the affected harness/connectors as required.

  2. TVA Replacement

If the wiring and connectors are in good condition (no shorts found in the harness) but the code persists, remove the intake tube and disconnect the electrical connections to the TVA and the air pressure/temperature sensor to remove and replace the TVA.

  3. ECU Verification

If both the wiring and the TVA valve are confirmed to be functioning properly, the final possible failure mode is a faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU).

  4. Reassembly & Clearing

After repairing the short or replacing the TVA, torque the TVA mounting bolts to 20 - 30 N·m (15 - 22 lb ft). Clear the fault codes and run the machine to verify the repair.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Throttle Valve Actuator (TVA)

Specific OEM part numbers vary heavily by exact machine serial number.

  • 60-pin engine harness connector

May be required if the short is located at the connector.

  • Wiring pigtails

May be required if the short is located at the connector.
