ENG 3846

New Holland ENG 3846 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Injector - Zero Fuel Calibration by Lambda (ZFL): DFC reporting error state on comparing energizing time to Max value injector 3

Issue description

The engine control system runs a 'Zero Fuel Calibration' to precisely adjust the fuel delivery of each injector. This fault is generated when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the energizing time required for Injector #3 has hit its maximum allowable limit. This failure is typically caused by incorrect injector programming (wrong IMA calibration code or improper flashing) or an internal mechanical or electrical defect within Injector #3.

Applies to these machines

  • L218
  • L220
  • L225
  • C227
  • C327
  • T4
  • T5
  • T5.100
  • T5.110
  • T5.120
  • SR175
  • SV185
  • SV300
  • TR320

Check the cause

  1. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) with Easy-Engine software to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Read the injector calibration codes currently programmed into the ECU.

  3. Inspect the physical fuel injector on Cylinder #3 and locate its 7-digit IMA (Injector Quantity Adjustment) calibration code printed on the injector body.

  4. Compare the physical code on Injector #3 to the code programmed in the ECU for Cylinder 3.

Repair steps

  1. Reprogram the ECU

If the IMA code in the software does not match the physical injector, use the EST to reprogram the ECU with the correct code.

  2. Flash/Update

If the codes match but the software is corrupted, try re-flashing the ECU to the latest software version.

  3. Test Run

Clear the fault codes and run the engine to see if the ZFL calibration completes successfully without throwing ENG 3846.

  4. Replace Injector

If the code persists after verifying the correct IMA code is programmed, Injector #3 has an internal defect and must be replaced.

  5. Code the New Injector

If replacement is necessary, install the new injector and use the EST to program the new 7-digit IMA code into the ECU. Failure to code the new injector will result in the same fault code returning.
