New Holland ENG 385 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): 5 Volt Sensor Supply voltage is too high
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) provides a regulated 5-volt reference signal to power various engine and chassis sensors. Fault code ENG 385 triggers when the ECM detects that the voltage on this specific supply circuit has exceeded the normal 5-volt threshold. This is almost always caused by the 5-volt circuit shorting to a 12-volt power source, a sensor failing and shorting internally, or an internal hardware failure within the ECM itself.

Check the cause
Inspect the engine harness and ECM connector pins (specifically the 5V supply pins, such as pin 10 on the chassis/engine harness) for dirt, moisture, corrosion, or bent pins.
Perform a sensor isolation test: disconnect the 5-volt sensors one at a time (e.g., remote throttle position sensor, engine speed sensor, oil pressure sensor). If the voltage drops back to 5V or the active code goes inactive when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted.
Perform a harness short-to-battery test: with the ECM and sensors disconnected, use a multimeter to check for continuity between the 5-volt supply wire and any unswitched battery supply (+12V) wires.
Verify ECM condition: if the harness and all sensors test good and no shorts to battery voltage are found in the wiring, the ECM likely has an internal short.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the equipment and disconnect the negative battery cable before performing any electrical repairs.
Replace Faulty Sensor
If the diagnostic isolation test identified a specific sensor causing the voltage spike, remove and replace the faulty sensor.
Repair Wiring Harness
If a short to a 12V source was found in the wiring, trace the harness to locate the chafed, melted, or damaged section. Repair the damaged wires using OEM-approved splicing techniques and heat shrink, or replace the affected harness section entirely.
Replace the ECM
If the harness and sensors are completely verified and the fault persists, the Engine Control Unit has suffered a hardware failure. Remove the old ECM, install the replacement ECM, and have it flashed/calibrated by a dealer with the correct machine software.
Clear Codes and Test
Reconnect all components and restore battery power. Turn the key on, use a diagnostic tool or the onboard instrument cluster to clear the inactive fault codes, and run the engine to confirm the fault does not return.
