New Holland ENG 386 – Engine Control Module (ECM): 5 Volt Sensor Supply voltage is too high
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the 5-volt reference circuit (specifically Sensor Supply 1) is experiencing a voltage higher than the normal operating range. This 5V circuit is a shared power supply used to operate several critical engine sensors. When this fault is active, the ECM will typically default to pre-programmed fallback values for all sensors on this circuit, which can result in an engine power derate.

Check the cause
Identify Shared Sensors: The 5V supply on pin A10 typically powers the Engine Position Sensor (Camshaft/Crankshaft), Intake Manifold Pressure (Boost) Sensor, and Engine Oil Pressure Sensor.
Sensor Isolation Test: Turn the key switch to the ON position and connect your diagnostic tool. Disconnect the sensors on this 5V circuit one at a time. If disconnecting a specific sensor causes the active ENG 386 code to drop out (or change to ENG 352: '5 Volt Sensor Supply voltage is too low'), that specific sensor is internally shorted and is the root cause.
Harness Short Test: If disconnecting the sensors does not resolve the high voltage, use a multimeter to check the engine wiring harness for a short to a 12V battery source.
ECM Pin Inspection: Inspect the ECM connector (specifically around pin A10) for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins that could be bridging a 12V power supply to the 5V rail.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Replace Faulty Component
If the sensor isolation test identified a shorted sensor, replace the faulty sensor. If the wiring harness was found to be shorted to battery voltage, locate the chafe mark/melted wire and repair the harness, or replace the engine wiring harness entirely. If the sensors and harness test perfectly but the ECM itself is outputting high voltage internally, the Engine Control Module must be replaced.
Reassemble
Reconnect all sensors and the ECM harness. Reconnect the battery.
Validation Cycle
Turn the key switch to the ON position, start the engine, and let it idle for at least 1 minute. This allows the ECM diagnostic monitor to run.
Clear Codes
Verify that the fault code status has changed to INACTIVE. Use the electronic service tool to clear the inactive faults and turn off the amber Check Engine light.
