ENG 387

New Holland ENG 387 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECU): Decelerator or Hand Throttle (STD cab) 5 Volt Supply voltage is too high.

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the 5-volt reference circuit supplying power to the hand throttle or decelerator position sensor (potentiometer) is exceeding the expected 5.0 volts. This condition is typically caused by the 5V supply wire shorting to a higher voltage source (like a 12V battery circuit), a loss of sensor ground causing the voltage to float, or an internal short within the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off), disconnect the 3-pin connector at the hand throttle potentiometer, and use a multimeter to measure the voltage on the 5V supply pin.

  2. If the voltage at the harness drops back down to a normal 5V (or 0V if the circuit is protected) when the sensor is unplugged, the potentiometer has an internal short.

  3. If the multimeter reads higher than 5V (e.g., 12V) on the supply pin while the sensor is disconnected, check the wiring harness for a short to battery power between the sensor and the Engine ECU.

  4. Verify the ground pin at the sensor connector has continuity to the chassis/ECU ground, as a bad ground can cause reference voltages to read out of range.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to protect the ECU from voltage spikes during repair.

  2. Harness Repair (If applicable)

    If your diagnostic checks revealed a short to 12V power, trace the throttle harness from the cab console down to the Engine ECU. Look for pinch points, chafed insulation, or melted wires. Splice and heat-shrink any damaged wires.

  3. Sensor Replacement (If applicable)

    Locate the hand throttle potentiometer inside the cab console attached to the throttle lever linkage. Remove the retaining screws or pins holding the potentiometer to the linkage actuator frame. Install the new OEM potentiometer, ensuring the physical linkage aligns correctly with the sensor's internal resistance element so it doesn't create 'dead spots.' Secure the mounting hardware and plug in the 3-terminal electrical connector.

  4. Reassembly and Testing

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON and clear the ENG 387 fault code using a diagnostic tool (or cycle the battery power if a tool is unavailable).

  5. Validation

    Start the tractor and move the hand throttle through its full range of motion. Verify that the engine RPM responds smoothly without surging and that the fault code does not return.
