New Holland ENG 388 – Engine Controller: Engine Brake driver 1 circuit failure
Issue description
This code indicates an electrical fault—such as an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to battery voltage—in the circuit that controls the #1 engine brake solenoid (often a Jake Brake or exhaust brake solenoid). Because the driver circuit cannot properly communicate with or actuate the solenoid, the engine brake will fail to operate correctly.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine Controller (ECU) to the Engine Brake Solenoid 1 for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines.
Disconnect the solenoid and ECU connectors and check the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back terminals.
Apply a direct power source matching system voltage (12V or 24V) to the solenoid terminals to perform a resistance/actuation test; it should pull the armature down with an audible click.
Perform a continuity test using a multimeter on the signal and ground wires between the ECU harness connector and the solenoid connector to ensure there is no short to ground or short to voltage.
Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to perform an active click test or component actuation test on Engine Brake Driver 1 to verify if the ECU is successfully sending the command.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate Engine Brake Solenoid 1. Depending on the engine model, this will either be mounted externally on the exhaust system (exhaust brake) or internally under the engine valve cover (compression release/Jake brake).
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic continuity test revealed a broken or shorted wire, splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink connectors, or replace the damaged harness section.
Replace the Solenoid
If the solenoid failed the bench test, disconnect its electrical connector, unbolt the solenoid valve assembly from its mounting block or rocker assembly, and install the replacement. Torque mounting bolts to OEM engine specifications.
Reassembly
Reconnect the solenoid electrical connector and reinstall the valve cover (if removed).
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position and use your diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 388 fault code. Start the engine and test the engine brake operation to ensure the code does not return.
