New Holland ENG 3887 – ENGINE controller (ECU): Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) IN Temperature is over 700 °C (1292 °F)
Issue description
The exhaust gas temperature sensor located at the inlet of the DOC is detecting an abnormally high temperature that exceeds the safe operating threshold, which triggers an Amber warning level.

Check the cause
Check for related sensor circuit fault codes (1801, 1802, 1805) that might indicate a failed sensor rather than an actual overheating event.
Inspect the DOC inlet temperature sensor (exhaust gas temp sensor #1) wiring harness and connector for melting, chafing, or an open/short circuit.
Test the resistance between the sensor pins (typically pins 2 and 3) using a multimeter to determine if the sensor has failed internally.
Evaluate the exhaust/burner system to see if raw fuel is entering the exhaust (over-fueling injector) or if there is a malfunction in the DPF burner/regeneration system causing a runaway thermal event.
Repair steps
Cool Down
Ensure the machine is turned off and the exhaust system has been allowed to cool completely. The DOC/DPF assembly reaches extreme temperatures and poses a severe burn hazard.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the DOC inlet temperature sensor (exhaust gas temp sensor #1) at the front/inlet section of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst assembly.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor harness.
Remove
Carefully unscrew the temperature sensor from the exhaust pipe/DOC housing.
Prepare the New Sensor
Apply a high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (be careful not to get any on the sensor probe itself).
Install
Thread the new sensor into the DOC inlet. Torque the exhaust temperature sensor to the manufacturer specification (typically 25 - 35 N·m or 18.4 - 25.8 lb-ft).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the machine's wiring harness.
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic tool or CAN-Bus DTC Eraser to clear the ENG 3887 fault code from the Engine ECU. Run the machine and monitor the DOC intake temperature to verify the repair.
