New Holland ENG 392 – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): Engine Brake driver 2 circuit failure
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an electrical anomaly in the circuit responsible for operating the #2 engine brake solenoid. The failure typically means the ECM is seeing an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to a voltage source on that specific driver line, preventing the second engine brake stage from engaging properly.

Check the cause
Verify the Fault: Use a diagnostic tool to check if ENG 392 is an active or stored (inactive) code.
Visual Inspection: Trace the engine wiring harness from the Engine ECU to the engine brake solenoids (often located under the valve cover on heavy-duty engines). Look for chafed wires, heat damage, or pinched harnesses.
Connector Check: Disconnect the ECM and the engine brake pass-through connectors. Inspect the pins for moisture, oil intrusion, corrosion, or bent/pushed-back pins.
Circuit Testing: Using a digital multimeter, check the 'Engine Brake Driver 2' circuit for continuity from the ECM pin to the solenoid. Test the wire for a short to ground or a short to power.
Solenoid Resistance Test: Measure the resistance (ohms) across the engine brake solenoid #2 terminals. Compare the reading to the engine manufacturer's specifications to ensure the solenoid coil is not internally shorted or open.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.
Access the Solenoid
If the engine brake solenoids are internal, clean the area around the top of the engine and remove the valve cover.
Isolate the Component
Based on your multimeter tests, determine if the failure is in the wiring harness or the solenoid itself.
Repair/Replace Wiring
If the harness is damaged, repair the broken or shorted wire using approved weather-sealed splices, or replace the damaged section of the engine harness.
Replace the Solenoid
If the engine brake solenoid #2 failed the resistance test, remove its retaining hardware, disconnect the electrical leads, and install a new solenoid. Torque the retaining nuts/bolts to the specific engine's OEM specifications.
Reassembly
Reinstall the valve cover using a new valve cover gasket. Reconnect all electrical connectors securely.
Restore Power
Reconnect the battery ground cable.
Clear Codes and Test
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (or equivalent scanner), clear the ENG 392 fault code, and run the engine. Bring it to operating temperature and test the engine brake operation to verify the repair.
