New Holland ENG 3948 – Engine ECU: EGR Lift Sensor 1 Signal Too High

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the voltage signal returning from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Lift Sensor 1 is exceeding the maximum expected threshold. This typically indicates a short circuit to battery power (+B) in the sensor harness, an open ground circuit, or an internal failure of the EGR lift sensor itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the EGR valve/lift sensor for chafing, melting, or pinched wires.

   Disconnect the EGR lift sensor connector and check for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.

   Turn the key ON (engine off) and use a multimeter to verify that the sensor supply voltage is within the normal 5V reference range.

   Test the signal wire for a short to battery voltage. Check the ground circuit for high resistance or an open circuit.

   Connect a diagnostic scan tool and monitor the live data for 'EGR Lift Sensor 1 Voltage.' If the voltage is pegged high (e.g., near 5V) and does not change when the valve is commanded to move, the sensor is likely shorted internally.

   Disconnect battery

   Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate EGR Control Valve

   Locate the EGR Control Valve assembly on the engine (typically mounted near the exhaust/intake manifold crossover).

   Disconnect electrical connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the EGR lift sensor.

   Remove mounting hardware

   Remove the mounting hardware/bolts securing the EGR valve to the manifold.

   Remove EGR valve

   Carefully remove the EGR valve. Ensure no debris falls into the intake or exhaust ports.

   Clean mating surfaces

   Remove and discard the old gaskets. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces on the manifold to ensure a proper seal.

   Install new EGR Control Valve

   Install the new EGR Control Valve using new OEM gaskets. Torque the mounting bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.

   Reconnect electrical harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new EGR lift sensor.

   Reconnect battery

   Reconnect the battery.

    Clear fault code and verify

    Start the engine and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 3948 fault code. Run the machine at operating temperature to verify the code does not return and that the EGR lift sensor live data is reading normally.
