ENG 3949

New Holland ENG 3949 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM): EGR Lift Sensor 1 Signal Too Low

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving a voltage signal from the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) lift position sensor that has fallen below the minimum expected threshold. This typically points to an open circuit, a short to ground in the sensor harness, a failed sensor, or an EGR valve that is mechanically stuck due to heavy carbon/soot buildup.

Check the cause

  1. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify that the fault is present and active, and check for other related EGR fault codes (such as 3950) indicating a mechanical bind.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness from the ECU to the EGR valve connector for damage, corrosion, abrasion, and incorrect attachment.

  3. Test the sensor circuit for an open load or a short circuit to ground.

  4. Check the EGR valve for excessive carbon or soot buildup preventing the lift sensor from reading the correct position.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed chafed wires, corrosion, or a short to ground in the EGR harness, repair or replace the damaged wiring/connector.

  3. Clean the EGR Valve

Remove the EGR valve from the exhaust manifold. If heavy soot is present, clean the valve thoroughly to ensure the mechanical components can move freely.

  4. Replace the Assembly

If the wiring is intact and cleaning the valve does not resolve the issue (or if the lift sensor has failed internally), the EGR valve/sensor assembly must be replaced.

  5. Relearn/Clear Codes

Reinstall the components, reconnect the battery, and use the Service Tool to clear the fault codes. Run an intake status/active test or perform the 'Self Learning Parameters' reset to calibrate the new EGR valve position with the ECU.
