ENG 395

New Holland ENG 395 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Front Timing current is too high

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an abnormally high electrical current at the front timing actuator circuit. When this fault is active, the engine may experience reduced performance and may run using only the rear three cylinders.

Applies to these machines

  • TG255
  • TG285
  • TJ275
  • TJ325
  • T8000 series
  • Magnum MX240
  • MX255
  • MX270
  • MX285
  • STX275
  • STX325

Check the cause

  1. Check the engine wiring harness for a short circuit to the battery or a short to ground

  2. Verify that the supply and return wires connecting the ECM to the front timing actuator are not open or shorted

  3. Measure the internal resistance of the front timing actuator (located on the fuel control housing) to check for low resistance

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the battery charger from its AC source (if applicable) and disconnect the starting batteries (negative cable first) to prevent accidental starting or electrical arcing.

  2. Inspect and Test Wiring

Trace the wiring harness from the ECM to the front timing actuator on the CAPS pump. Repair or replace any sections of the harness that show chafing, melting, or shorting to the battery/ground.

  3. Test the Actuator

Disconnect the front timing actuator and test its resistance. If the resistance is below the specified threshold (low resistance causing high current), the actuator has failed internally.

  4. Replace Components

If the actuator is faulty, replace the front timing actuator. Note that on many CAPS systems, the actuators are not serviced separately, requiring the replacement or remanufacture of the entire CAPS fuel injection pump assembly.

  5. Reassemble and Power Up

Reconnect the wiring harness and the battery cables.

  6. Validate the Repair

Perform a key cycle, start the engine, and let it idle for 1 minute. If the repair was successful, the fault code status will change to INACTIVE immediately, and the ECM will turn off the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp.

  7. Clear Codes

Use a recommended electronic service tool to issue a "Reset All Faults" command to clear the inactive codes from the ECM memory.
