New Holland ENG 3952 – Engine ECU: Exhaust Gas Temperature 1 Sensor Signal Too Low

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving a voltage signal from the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) 1 Sensor that has fallen below the minimum acceptable threshold. This generally points to an electrical issue such as an open circuit, a short to ground, a disconnected wiring harness, or a completely failed internal sensor element.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the EGT 1 sensor wiring harness and connector for melting, chafing, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check the sensor's internal resistance. If the resistance reads as an open circuit (infinite/OL) or a dead short, the sensor has failed internally.

  3. With the sensor disconnected and the key ON, check the harness side for the proper 5V reference signal from the ECU and check the ground circuit for continuity.

  4. Use a diagnostic scan tool to look at the live data for Exhaust Gas Temperature 1. If it reads an implausible default value (e.g., -40°C or an extreme high/low default), it confirms the circuit is compromised.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Ensure the machine is turned off and the exhaust system has completely cooled down to prevent severe burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the EGT 1 sensor in the exhaust stream. It will be threaded into the exhaust pipe upstream of the DOC/DPF assembly or turbocharger.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the machine's wiring harness.

  4. Removal

    Use a specialized sensor socket or a flare-nut wrench to carefully unscrew the sensor. Apply penetrating oil to the threads and let it sit if the sensor is stuck.

  5. Preparation

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-applied). Do not get any anti-seize on the sensor probe itself, as this will contaminate the readings.

  6. Installation

    Thread the new sensor into the exhaust bung by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the harness, ensuring it clicks securely. Route the wire away from direct contact with the hot exhaust piping.

  8. Clear Codes

    Turn the key ON, use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 3952 fault code, and start the engine. Monitor live data to ensure the EGT 1 temperature rises plausibly as the exhaust heats up.
