New Holland ENG 3955 – ENGINE: Intake Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Performance Bank 1

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the signal from the CMP sensor is out of the expected parameters. This condition is typically caused by mechanical misalignment, incorrect spacing between the sensor and the trigger teeth, a failing sensor, or an issue where the camshaft timing has become excessively delayed/retarded compared to the crankshaft.

Check the cause

  1. Check sensor seating to ensure the sensor is seated properly and perfectly flush with the mounting flange, as spacing between the trigger teeth and sensor is critical.

  2. Verify proper mechanical alignment and tooth spacing of the camshaft speed sensor.

  3. Inspect the sensor's electrical connector and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, open circuits, or shorts to ground/battery.

  4. Verify that the engine's mechanical timing or Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system is functioning correctly, as an over-retarded camshaft can trigger this performance code.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine's ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Intake Camshaft Position Sensor on Bank 1 of the engine.

    Typically mounted on the cylinder head near the intake camshaft.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the CMP sensor.

  4. Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in place.

  5. Carefully extract the old sensor from the mounting port.

  6. Thoroughly clean the mounting flange on the engine block.

    Any debris left behind will prevent the new sensor from sitting flush, which will alter the critical gap between the sensor and the trigger teeth and cause the code to return.

  7. Insert the new Camshaft Position Sensor, ensuring it is seated completely flush against the mounting surface.

  8. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque.

  9. Reconnect the electrical connector.

  10. Reconnect the battery.

  11. Connect a diagnostic tool to the machine and clear the ENG 3955 DTC from the Engine ECU.

  12. Start the engine and run it at various RPMs to verify the fault code does not return.
