New Holland ENG 396 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Rear Fueling current is too low
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a low current or an open circuit at the rear fueling actuator circuit.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- T8000 series tractors
- TJ series tractors
- CR9090
- CX8080
- CX8090
- Magnum series tractors
- MX Magnum
Check the cause
Check for an open circuit in the wiring harness between the ECM and the rear fueling actuator
Check for a short to ground in the wiring harness
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the rear fueling actuator solenoid to check for high actuator resistance (an internal open)
Inspect the fueling actuator connector for backed-out pins, corrosion, or broken wires, which is a highly common failure point on CAPS pumps
Repair steps
Turn off the equipment and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the rear fueling actuator on the CAPS fuel injection pump housing.
Disconnect the actuator connector and inspect both the harness side and the actuator side for oil intrusion, corrosion, or damaged pins.
If the wiring harness or connector is damaged, splice in a new fueling actuator connector assembly using proper crimp connectors and dielectric grease.
If the wiring and connector test good, measure the resistance across the pins of the rear fueling actuator itself.
If the resistance is out of specification (indicating an internal open circuit), the actuator or the CAPS pump accumulator assembly must be replaced.
Reconnect the battery.
Validate the Repair: Perform a key cycle, start the engine, and let it idle for 1 minute.
The fault code status displayed by the electronic service tool should change to INACTIVE, and the ECM will turn off the amber CHECK ENGINE lamp.
Use the "Reset All Faults" command in the electronic service tool to clear the inactive fault from the ECM memory.
