ENG 3963

New Holland ENG 3963 – Engine ECU (ISM-DI ENGINE): Supply Pump Protection

Issue description

The Engine ECU detects that the actual fuel rail pressure is significantly above the target pressure, or there is an abnormal condition in the high-pressure fuel supply pump system, causing the ECU to enter a protection mode that limits engine power and fueling.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland 200 Series Skid Steers (e.g., L220)
  • New Holland E50B and similar hydraulic excavators
  • Case SR130 Alpha Series Skid Steer Loaders
  • Case SR160 Alpha Series Skid Steer Loaders
  • Case SR175 Alpha Series Skid Steer Loaders

Check the cause

  1. Scan for secondary DTCs that pinpoint the exact failure, such as P0089, P2294/ENG 3964, or P1093.

  2. Monitor live fuel rail pressure using a diagnostic scan tool, comparing Actual Rail Pressure to Target Rail Pressure while the engine is running.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connector for the Suction Control Valve (SCV) and the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor for damaged wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  4. Check the fuel filter and fuel lines for heavy contamination, which is a leading cause of SCV and supply pump failure.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the SCV

If diagnostics point to a stuck control valve, locate the Suction Control Valve on the side of the high-pressure supply pump.

  2. Replace the SCV

Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the mounting bolts, and pull the SCV out. Lubricate the O-rings on the new SCV with clean diesel fuel and install it. Torque the bolts to OEM specification.

  3. Replace the Supply Pump

If replacing the SCV does not resolve the issue, or if the pump has suffered internal mechanical failure (metal shavings found in the fuel), the entire supply pump must be replaced. Remove the intake pipe, fuel lines, and pump bracket, and use a gear puller to remove the supply pump gear.

  4. ECU Reset and Relearn

After replacing the SCV or the supply pump, you must use the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or an Isuzu-compatible diagnostic tool to reset the ECU default values. Allow the engine to run for several minutes to learn the performance parameters of the new pump/valve.

  5. Clear Codes

Clear the ENG 3963 / P2293 fault code and test run the machine under load to verify that target and actual rail pressures match.
