ENG 3964

New Holland ENG 3964 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Supply Pump Exchange

Issue description

Triggers when the engine control unit detects that the actual fuel pressure in the common rail has exceeded the target/maximum operating pressure for a sustained period (typically 15 seconds), or when the high-pressure fuel supply pump's internal wear has reached a limit where the system can no longer compensate for fuel flow via the Suction Control Valve (SCV).

Applies to these machines

  • L218
  • L220
  • LS190
  • SR175
  • SV185

Check the cause

  1. Check for concurrent codes, specifically 3962 (SCV Stuck) or Rail Pressure Sensor codes (P0191, P0192, P0193), and diagnose them first.

  2. Inspect the Suction Control Valve (SCV) wiring harness and connector for damage, corrosion, or an open/short circuit.

  3. Verify actual fuel rail pressure versus target pressure using an electronic service tool (EST) during cranking and idling to rule out a faulty sensor reading.

Repair steps

  1. Repair Wiring/Connectors

If the diagnostic checks reveal a short or open circuit at the SCV or rail pressure sensor, repair the wiring harness or replace the connector.

  2. Replace the SCV

If the SCV is mechanically stuck but the pump is otherwise intact, replace the SCV.

  3. Replace the Supply Pump

If the SCV and rail pressure sensor are functioning normally, the fault lies within the high-pressure supply pump itself, and it must be exchanged.

  4. Perform Pump Relearn

Whether you replace the SCV or the entire supply pump, you must perform a 'supply pump relearn' procedure using the diagnostic service tool. This resets the learning values in the Engine ECU so it can adapt to the new pump's flow characteristics.

  5. Clear Codes

Clear the fault codes and test-run the machine to ensure the rail pressure stabilizes and the code does not return.
