Issue description
The engine control system is receiving a continuous, uninterrupted signal from the engine stop switch (often an emergency kill switch). Because the circuit is stuck in the "closed" position, the system believes the operator is actively commanding the engine to shut down, which will typically result in a crank-no-start condition or an immediate engine stall.

Check the cause
Physical Inspection: Inspect the engine stop switch on the cab control panel. Ensure it is not physically jammed, broken, or stuck in the depressed position due to debris or mechanical failure.
Electrical Testing (Switch Continuity): Disconnect the switch from the wiring harness. Use a multimeter to test for continuity across the switch terminals. The switch should show an open circuit when in the "Run" position and a closed circuit when in the "Stop" position. If it shows continuity in both positions, the switch has failed internally and must be replaced.
Wiring Harness Check: If the switch tests good, inspect the wiring harness between the switch and the Engine ECU. Look for chafed wires causing a short-to-ground or a short to another wire, which would keep the circuit closed even if the switch is open.
Connector Inspection: Check the switch pigtail and ECU connectors for moisture, dirt, or corrosion. Water intrusion can bridge the pins and cause a false closed-circuit reading.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Access the Switch
Locate the engine stop switch (typically located on the right-side cab interior control panel or the main dashboard console, depending on the machine model).
Remove the Switch
Carefully pry the switch bezel from the panel or access the rear of the console to remove the retaining nut/screws.
Disconnect Wiring
Unplug the electrical connector from the back of the switch.
Install New Part
Connect the wiring harness to the new engine stop switch and snap or screw it back into the mounting panel.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and verify that the switch operates correctly. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 3965 fault code from the ECU memory.
