New Holland ENG 397 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): Rear Fueling current is too high
Issue description
The engine controller has detected an abnormally high electrical current draw on the circuit responsible for the rear fueling actuator. This typically points to a short circuit in the wiring harness or an internal short within the actuator coil on the fuel injection pump.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- New Holland T8000 Series
- New Holland T8040
- New Holland TG Series
- New Holland TG 285
- New Holland T7.270
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECM and the CAPS pump's rear fueling actuator for rubbed wires causing a short to ground or a short to another voltage source.
Inspect the electrical connectors at the CAPS pump for pushed pins, corrosion, or fluid intrusion.
Test the resistance of the rear fueling actuator on the CAPS pump. A dead short in the coil will cause the 'current is too high' condition.
Repair steps
Preparation
Disconnect battery power. Locate the CAPS pump on the engine and remove the plastic lines to gain access.
Disconnect Lines
Remove the main fuel line banjo fitting at the top, the 19mm fittings for the lower hoses, and unplug the electrical connectors.
Set Engine Timing
Rotate the engine to Top Dead Center (TDC). Ensure the timing marks and the keyway hole on the pump align with the TDC mark.
Remove Pump
Remove the top access cover to unscrew the gear nut. Remove the pump mounting bolts (there are two 15mm bolts; the top one is best accessed with an extension and a 15mm swivel socket).
Install New Pump
Slide the remanufactured/new CAPS pump into place, ensuring the keyway is facing straight up and aligned with the engine timing marks.
Update Mounting Hardware
If you are installing an updated/superseded CAPS pump, the new pump housing is thicker than the original. You MUST install an updated 'fuel strap' (mounting bracket) to secure it properly.
Reassembly
Reinstall the 15mm mounting bolts, the gear nut, the 19mm fuel lines, the banjo fitting, and the electrical connectors. Clear the fault codes and test run the engine.
Parts you might need
(2)CAPS Fuel Injection Pump / Rear Fueling Actuator Assembly
Fits 8.3L and 9.0L Cummins/New Holland engines. Aftermarket conversion kits (e.g., CAPSKITM) are also available to bypass the factory CAPS system.
CAPS Pump Fuel Strap
Required when updating to the newest pump part number due to a thickness difference in the updated pump housing.
