ENG 3974

New Holland ENG 3974 – Engine ECU: EGR Duty Motor Status error

Issue description

An electrical fault in the EGR valve's motor circuit where the signal from the EGR duty motor is shorted to power or ground, meaning the ECU cannot accurately control or monitor the position of the EGR valve to regulate exhaust gas recirculation.

Applies to these machines

  • L213
  • L215
  • L218
  • L220
  • L223
  • L225
  • L228
  • L230
  • C227
  • C232
  • C238
  • SR130
  • SR160
  • SR175
  • SV185

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running between the Engine ECU and the EGR valve actuator for chafed wires, melted insulation, or areas where the harness may be shorting against the engine block or frame.

  2. Disconnect the EGR valve electrical connector and inspect for water intrusion, corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-out terminals.

  3. Use a multimeter to check the EGR motor signal circuit for continuity and verify if the short to power or ground is located within the wiring harness or if it is internal to the EGR valve motor itself.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

Ensure the machine is completely powered down before beginning work.

  2. Locate the EGR valve.

The EGR valve is mounted at the rear of the engine and connected to the exhaust manifold.

  3. Disconnect the electrical harness from the EGR valve actuator.

Carefully unplug the connector to isolate the component.

  4. Repair the wiring harness or replace the connector pigtail.

Perform this step if the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue.

  5. Remove and replace the EGR valve assembly or EGR actuator.

If the wiring harness tests good, the short is internal to the EGR duty motor. Replace the assembly or specific actuator depending on the engine model's modularity.

  6. Install the new EGR valve/actuator.

Torque mounting bolts to OEM specifications and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Reconnect the battery.

    Restore power to the machine.

  8. Clear the ENG 3974 fault code.

Use a diagnostic tool (or CAN-bus DTC eraser) to clear the code from the Engine ECU.

  9. Start the engine and run it at operating temperature.

Verify the code does not return and that the EGR system is functioning properly.
