Internal hardware or software failure within the engine controller where the module is unable to correctly read its Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM). This memory stores critical engine datasets, calibration parameters, and injector codes.

   Inspect the vehicle's electrical system, battery, and alternator for high voltage fluctuations or spikes, which are a primary cause of EEPROM corruption

   Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if the ECU can communicate and verify if the engine dataset and injector codes are still present or if they have been wiped/corrupted

   Check for accompanying memory codes such as 3971 (Engine ECU Memory Error - Verify Engine Dataset) or 3970 (ECU Memory Fault)

   Reprogram the ECU

   Using the New Holland EST (Electronic Service Tool), attempt to reflash/reprogram the Engine Controller with the correct engine dataset.

   Rewrite Injector Codes

   If the flash is successful, ensure the correct injector codes are written back to the ECU.

   Replace the ECU

   If the EST cannot communicate with the ECU, if the reprogramming fails, or if fault code 3980 persists after a successful flash, the internal EEPROM is physically damaged. You must replace the Engine Controller.

   Post-Replacement

   If the ECU is replaced, you must use the EST to program the new module with the correct engine dataset and injector codes for the specific machine.
