ENG 3988

New Holland ENG 3988 – Engine ECU: Fuel Pump Rack Position Sensor: Output Voltage High

Issue description

This code indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving a voltage signal from the Fuel Pump Rack Position Sensor (or Fuel Solenoid Position Sensor) that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. This condition is typically caused by a short circuit to a high voltage source, an open ground circuit in the sensor wiring, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Skid Steer Loaders (SSL)
  • Compact Track Loaders (CTL)
  • Backhoe Loaders
  • SR175
  • L220
  • B90B
  • B100B

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the Fuel Pump Rack Position Sensor for chafing, rodent damage, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the sensor and check the plug connector for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back pins.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the sensor wiring for a short to power (high voltage source) or an open ground connection.

  4. Check the actual voltage output of the sensor. If the wiring harness is intact and providing the correct reference voltage and ground, but the signal wire is still outputting an out-of-range high voltage, the sensor itself has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

  2. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the wiring, repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the harness connector.

  3. Sensor Replacement

If the wiring is verified as good, remove and replace the Fuel Pump Rack Position Sensor (or the fuel solenoid assembly, depending on how it is integrated into the ISM-IDI injection pump).

  4. Reassembly

Reconnect the sensor plug and reconnect the battery.

  5. Clear Codes

Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the ENG 3988 code from the Engine ECU memory.

  6. Test Run

Start the engine and monitor the system to ensure the fault code does not return and the engine operates smoothly without fueling issues.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Fuel Pump Rack Position Sensor / Fuel Solenoid Position Sensor

Ensure the replacement part is specified for the ISM-IDI engine used in New Holland SSL/CTL models (e.g., SR175, L220).
