New Holland ENG 399 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Rear Timing current is too high.
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an abnormally high electrical current draw on the circuit for the rear timing actuator/solenoid. This typically points to a direct short to ground in the wiring harness, a shorted internal coil within the pump's stator/ICV, or an internal failure of the ECM.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- TG210
- TG230
- TG255
- TG285
- CR9090
- CX8080
- CX8090
Check the cause
Visually inspect the engine wiring harness between the Engine ECM and the CAPS pump Injection Control Valve (ICV) for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to ground.
Disconnect the harness at the CAPS pump stator and check the pins and connectors for fluid intrusion (diesel fuel or oil) or corrosion.
With the harness disconnected, use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the pins for the rear timing solenoid on the CAPS pump ICV. A dead short (near zero ohms) indicates the internal coil has failed.
With both the ECM and the CAPS pump disconnected, check the rear timing signal wire for continuity to ground to verify if the wiring harness is shorted.
Repair steps
Turn off the ignition key switch and disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical arcing or ECM damage.
Disconnect the wiring harness from the CAPS pump stator/ICV.
If the harness is shorted: Repair the damaged section of the wiring harness or replace the engine harness assembly.
If the ICV/Stator is shorted: Replace the Injection Control Valve (stator) assembly.
On CAPS pumps, this module sits on top of the pump and can often be replaced independently of the entire pump.
If the entire CAPS pump is heavily worn or contaminated: Replace the complete CAPS fuel injection pump assembly.
Note: When replacing a CAPS pump, it is highly recommended/required by manufacturers to also replace the transient suppressor to protect the new electronics.
Reconnect the wiring harnesses to the pump and ECM.
Reconnect the battery.
Use a diagnostic tool (such as CNH EST) to clear the inactive fault codes.
Start the engine and verify that ENG 399 does not return and that the engine idles and throttles smoothly without shutting down.
