New Holland ENG 3990 – Engine ECU: Burner Injector 2 Error: High current / Aftertreatment Burner Injector 2 Short Circuit

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an abnormally high current draw or a short circuit on the electrical circuit for the #2 Aftertreatment Burner Injector, which is a critical component of the DPF active regeneration system.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to Burner Injector 2 on the DPF/DOC assembly for melted insulation, chafing, or exposed wires that could be shorting to the chassis or another wire.

   Perform an injector continuity test by disconnecting the electrical connector at Burner Injector 2 and checking for continuity across pins 1 and 2. Infinite resistance (open circuit) or exactly 0 Ω (dead short) indicates internal failure.

   If the injector tests good, use a multimeter to check the harness side for a short to ground or a short to power back to the Engine ECU.

   Safety First

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable. Crucial: Allow the exhaust system (DPF/DOC assembly) to cool completely, as it reaches extremely high temperatures.

   Access the Injector

   Locate the aftertreatment burner assembly on the exhaust system and identify Burner Injector 2.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical connector. Carefully unthread/remove the faulty burner injector from the after-burner housing.

   Installation

   Install the new burner injector. Ensure any required sealing washers or O-rings are in place and torque to the OEM specification found in your specific machine's service manual.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new injector. Reconnect the battery.

   Clear Codes & Test

   Use a New Holland diagnostic service tool to clear the ENG 3990 code. Start the engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. Initiate a manual DPF regeneration to verify the burner ignites properly. Note: if replacing the injector does not resolve the short circuit/high current reading, the entire after-burner assembly may need to be replaced.
