ENG 3992

New Holland ENG 3992 – ENGINE: Burner Shut Down Mode: Soot Level is over 140%

Issue description

This code indicates that the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has accumulated a soot load exceeding the critical threshold of 140%. Because the soot level is dangerously high, the engine controller locks out both automatic and manual regeneration to prevent a severe thermal event, and the engine enters a protective 'Burner Shut Down Mode' or severe derate.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes (e.g., 3993, 3994, 3995 for DPF/DOC Temperatures over 800°C, or 3996 for Delta P Sensor Voltage Low) that might have caused the filter to falsely read full or fail to regenerate.

  2. Inspect the Delta P (Differential Pressure) Sensor and its connecting tubes for blockages, melting, or damage, which can falsely report a 140% soot load.

  3. Review operating habits to verify if the machine has been subjected to excessive idling or if the operator repeatedly shut down the machine while the 'REGEN ACTIVE' prompt was displayed.

Repair steps

  1. Remove the DPF

Disconnect the exhaust clamps, temperature sensors, and differential pressure lines, and physically remove the DPF housing from the machine.

  2. Inspect the DPF Core

Check the substrate for cracking, melting, or heavy oil/coolant contamination. If the core is melted or structurally damaged, the DPF must be replaced.

  3. Professional Cleaning or Replacement

If the core is intact, the DPF must be sent to an authorized New Holland Construction dealer or a specialized DPF cleaning facility. They will use specialized pneumatic and thermal baking machines to extract the compacted soot and ash. Alternatively, install a new or Remanufactured DPF.

  4. Reinstallation

Reinstall the cleaned or replacement DPF using new gaskets, seals, and V-band clamps to prevent exhaust leaks.

  5. ECU Reset

Connect a New Holland diagnostic service tool (EST) to the machine. You must reset the DPF soot load accumulator in the Engine ECU to 0% and clear the 3992 fault code. If this step is skipped, the engine will remain in Shut Down Mode.
