New Holland ENG 418 – Engine Controller (ENG / Engine ECU): Water in Fuel sensor indicates the water in the fuel filter needs to be drained
Issue description
This code triggers when the Water in Fuel (WIF) sensor detects that the water level inside the fuel filter/water separator assembly has reached the maximum threshold and requires manual draining to prevent water from entering the fuel injection system.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection of the Filter: Check the fuel filter/water separator bowl for visible water separation (water is heavier than diesel and will pool at the bottom).
Sensor Verification: If you drain the filter and the code persists, the WIF sensor itself may have failed. A failing sensor is a known cause of a 'false' ENG 418 code.
Wiring Check: Inspect the electrical connector and wiring harness leading to the WIF sensor at the bottom of the fuel filter for corrosion, breaks, or loose connections.
Repair steps
Turn off the engine and allow it to cool.
Close the fuel shutoff valve.
Usually by turning the handle toward the 'C' or closed position to prevent the entire tank from draining.
Place a catch pan beneath the fuel filter/water separator.
Loosen the drain screw/valve at the bottom of the fuel filter or remove the fuel sediment bowl.
Usually about ¾ of a turn, depending on your specific model.
Open the fuel shutoff valve briefly to allow fluid to flow.
Let it drain until only clean diesel fuel is flowing from the base, with no water.
Close the shutoff valve, tighten the drain screw, and reattach the sediment bowl if removed.
Open the fuel shutoff valve and bleed/prime the fuel system.
Remove any air before attempting to start the tractor.
Ensure the fuel shutoff valve is closed.
Perform this step if replacing a faulty WIF sensor because the code persists.
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the WIF sensor.
Located at the bottom of the fuel filter.
Place a catch pan underneath and unscrew the old WIF sensor from the bottom of the filter housing.
Install the new WIF sensor and tighten it.
Ensure the O-ring/gasket is properly seated.
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Open the fuel valve, prime the fuel system, and start the engine.
Verify the ENG 418 code clears and there are no leaks.
