New Holland ENG 419 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU): Boost Pressure data invalid

Issue description

The engine control module is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or illogical signal from the boost pressure sensor (often a MAP/Boost sensor). This means the sensor's reading does not align with the engine's current operating conditions (RPM, load, throttle position), indicating a likely sensor failure, a wiring issue, or a physical pressure anomaly in the intake manifold.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and the connector leading to the boost pressure sensor on the intake manifold for chafed wires, corrosion, or a loose connector plug.

  2. Inspect the intake manifold and turbocharger plumbing for severe boost leaks (cracked hoses, loose clamps) or blockages that could cause the pressure data to fall outside of expected logic parameters.

  3. Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving the correct 5-volt reference supply from the Engine ECU.

  4. Use a dealer-level diagnostic tool to read live data from the boost pressure sensor. If the sensor reads a high pressure when the engine is off (should be atmospheric pressure), the sensor is internally shorted or failed.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the manifold boost pressure sensor, which is mounted directly on the intake manifold.

  3. Disconnect

    Carefully depress the locking tab on the 4-pin electrical connector and unplug it from the sensor.

  4. Remove

    Remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the sensor to the manifold. Pull the sensor straight out.

  5. Install

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor slightly to prevent tearing. Push the new sensor into the manifold port and secure it with the retaining bolt.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks securely.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 419 fault code from the Engine ECU memory.

  8. Test

    Start the engine and verify that the code does not return under load.
