New Holland ENG 427 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / EDC): J1939 data link not fast enough

Issue description

The Engine Controller is experiencing communication timeouts, dropped packets, or an abnormally slow update rate on the J1939 network. This is almost always a physical layer problem, such as high resistance, a short circuit, degraded wiring, or a failing module that is corrupting data packets.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the battery is fully charged and the Engine ECU grounds are clean, as low voltage can cause CAN transceivers to drop offline.

  2. Disconnect the machine's battery and measure the resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the J1939 diagnostic port or main CAN connector (should be exactly 60 ohms).

  3. With the battery disconnected, measure continuity between CAN High/CAN Low and the chassis ground to check for shorts.

  4. Reconnect the battery (key ON) and measure voltage on CAN High (should be approx. 2.5V - 2.7V) and CAN Low (approx. 2.3V - 2.5V).

  5. Disconnect other modules on the J1939 network one by one (e.g., Transmission TCU, Armrest ARU, Instrument Cluster) to see if the communication rate recovers, indicating a module dragging down the bus.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the key switch and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during testing.

  2. Inspect the Harness

    Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the Engine ECU. Look for chafing, corrosion, or rodent damage.

  3. Clean Connectors

    Disconnect the main Engine ECU harness connectors. Inspect the pins for pushed-back terminals, moisture, or green corrosion. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  4. Repair Wiring / Resistors

    If the resistance test yielded 120 ohms, locate the two CAN terminating resistors and replace the faulty resistor or repair the broken wire leading to it. If wires are chafed and shorting out, cut out the damaged section and splice in a CAN bus wiring repair section using weather-sealed crimp connectors.

  5. Replace ECU (Last Resort)

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly, terminating resistors are intact, and isolating other modules does not clear the fault, the CAN transceiver inside the Engine ECU has likely failed. The ECU will need to be replaced and flashed by a dealer.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use a diagnostic service tool (like CNH EST) to clear the inactive ENG 427 code and verify it does not return.
