ENG 429

New Holland ENG 429 – Engine Controller (ECM / EDC): Water in Fuel Sensor voltage is too low

Issue description

The signal voltage from the Water in Fuel (WIF) sensor to the controller has fallen below normal operating parameters or is shorted to a low source (ground).

Applies to these machines

  • T4
  • T5
  • T6
  • T7
  • T8040
  • T9
  • CR9090
  • CX8080
  • CX8090
  • 10.90X
  • Magnum
  • MX240
  • MXM
  • W270B

Check the cause

  1. Drain the water from the fuel filter/water separator, as accumulated water or contaminated fuel can trigger WIF sensor issues.

  2. Inspect the WIF sensor (located on the fuel filter) and its electrical connector for damaged pins.

  3. Check the wiring harness for shorts to ground or a loss of proper supply voltage.

  4. Check the connection at the Engine Control Module (ECM), such as pin B40 on applicable models, to ensure the voltage signal is reaching the controller.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Water in Fuel (WIF) sensor

Typically mounted at the bottom of the fuel filter / water separator assembly.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor

Check for any corrosion or damaged terminals.

  3. Drain the fuel filter housing

Drain to prevent excessive fuel spills.

  4. Unscrew the faulty WIF sensor

Remove it from the fuel filter.

  5. Install the new replacement WIF sensor

Ensure any required O-rings or gaskets are in place.

  6. Reconnect the electrical harness

    Reconnect to the new sensor.

  7. Prime the fuel system

    Prime if necessary.

  8. Clear the fault codes from the ECM

Verify that the repair was successful and the code does not return.
